Function

function

Catalyzes the transfer of a sulfate group from a phenyl sulfate ester to other phenolic compounds. Is able to use several substrate donors and acceptors in vitro: using phenol as an acceptor substrate, 4-methylumbelliferyl sulfate is the best donor substrate, followed by beta-naphthyl sulfate, p-nitrophenyl sulfate (PNS), and alpha-naphthyl sulfate; using PNS as a donor substrate, alpha-naphthol is the best acceptor substrate, followed by phenol, resorcinol, p-acetaminophen, tyramine, and tyrosine. Cannot use 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phophosulfate (PAPS), the donor substrate of mammalian sulfotransferase. May be a detoxifying enzyme, converting toxic phenolic compounds into non-toxic materials.
