Q9HHS8 · GVPO2_HALSA

Function

function

A minor component of the gas vesicle (GV), also found in soluble extracts (PubMed:21158390).
May play a role in transcription and/or RNA stability and/or in GV assembly (By similarity).
Gas vesicles are hollow, gas filled proteinaceous nanostructures found in several microbial planktonic microorganisms. They allow positioning of halobacteria at the optimal depth for growth in the poorly aerated, shallow brine pools of their habitat (PubMed:33711860).
Expression of 2 c-vac DNA fragments containing 2 divergently transcribed regions (gvpE-gvpF-gvpG-gvpH-gvpI-gvpJ-gvpK-gvpL-gvpM and gvpA-gvpC-gvpN-gvpO) allows H.volcanii to produce gas vesicles.

Miscellaneous

Encoded in a 14-gene locus called c-vac which produces cylindrical gas vesicles only in the stationary growth phase.

Expression

Induction

In PHH4 (a deletion of the p-vac locus) not transcribed in exponential phase, transcribed from stationary to mid-stationary phase. Small amounts of longer transcripts that include gvpC-gvpN-gvpO and further downstream are also seen as well as short transcripts that only hybridize to this gene (PubMed:8763925).
Gas vesicles appear earlier when grown in static culture, possibly due to O2-limitation (PubMed:33711860).

Interaction

Subunit

Forms homodimers, forms a GvpN-GvpO heterodimer, interacts with GvpC, GvpF, GvpI and GvpL, might interact with GvpA.
