Phenotypes & Variants

Disruption phenotype

Viable. Less sensitive to high iron and copper levels than wild-type. Secretes schizokinen even in the presence of iron when grown in BG11 medium or in BG11 without iron and copper as opposed to no secretion of schizokinen in wild-type under these conditions. Secretes schizokinen under iron-limiting conditions similarly to the wild-type. No effect on schizokinen-complexed iron uptake. Contrary to the wild-type, iron uptake is increased when grown in BG11 without iron and copper as well as in BG11 without iron, but addition of copper decreases iron uptake. Decreased copper content compared to wild-type when grown in BG11 medium without iron. Iron uptake is stimulated by copper similarly to the wild-type, but the rate of uptake of both metals is decreased compared to wild-type. Increased survival on high iron concentrations supplied as ferric ammonium citrate (FeACi) compared to wild-type.

Expression

Induction

Expression is significantly up-regulated by nitrogen starvation after 24 hours (PubMed:17655501).
Constitutively expressed. Expression is very slightly increased by transferring cells into a medium lacking iron or copper (PubMed:20647000).
