Function
function
Catalyzes the last step of the oxidative degradation of choline to glycine. Converts sarcosine into glycine.
Catalytic activity
- (6S)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolyl-(gamma-L-Glu)(n) + H+ + oxidized [electron-transfer flavoprotein] + sarcosine = (6R)-5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolyl-(gamma-L-Glu)(n) + glycine + reduced [electron-transfer flavoprotein]This reaction proceeds in the forward direction.
(6S)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolyl-(γ-L-Glu)(n) RHEA-COMP:14738 + CHEBI:15378 + RHEA-COMP:10685 + CHEBI:57433 = (6R)-5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolyl-(γ-L-Glu)(n) RHEA-COMP:13257 + CHEBI:57305 + RHEA-COMP:10686
Cofactor
Note: Binds 1 FAD covalently per monomer.
Pathway
Amine and polyamine degradation; sarcosine degradation; formaldehyde and glycine from sarcosine: step 1/1.
