Function
function
Catalyzes the conversion of fatty acids such as long chain and very long-chain fatty acids to their active form acyl-CoAs for both synthesis of cellular lipids, and degradation via beta-oxidation. Can activate diverse saturated, monosaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Has increased ability to activate oleic and linoleic acid. May play a role in spermatogenesis.
Catalytic activity
- a long-chain fatty acid + ATP + CoA = a long-chain fatty acyl-CoA + AMP + diphosphateThis reaction proceeds in the forward direction.
- ATP + CoA + hexadecanoate = AMP + diphosphate + hexadecanoyl-CoAThis reaction proceeds in the forward direction.
- (9Z)-octadecenoate + ATP + CoA = (9Z)-octadecenoyl-CoA + AMP + diphosphateThis reaction proceeds in the forward direction.
- (9Z,12Z)-octadecadienoate + ATP + CoA = (9Z,12Z)-octadecadienoyl-CoA + AMP + diphosphateThis reaction proceeds in the forward direction.
- ATP + CoA + tetracosanoate = AMP + diphosphate + tetracosanoyl-CoAThis reaction proceeds in the forward direction.

Expression
Tissue specificity
Testis- and brainstem-specific. Expressed in pubertal and adult testis. Enriched in germ cells and Sertoli cells while present at a lower level in Leydig cells. Present in testicular Sertoli cells and large motoneurons in the medulla oblongata and cervical spinal cord (at protein level).
