Function
function
Catalyzes both the uptake and excretion of putrescine. The uptake of putrescine is dependent on the membrane potential and the excretion involves putrescine-ornithine antiporter activity.
Catalytic activity
- putrescine(in) + H+(in) = putrescine(out) + H+(out)This reaction proceeds in the backward direction.putrescine (in)CHEBI:326268
+ H+ (in)CHEBI:15378= putrescine (out)CHEBI:326268+ H+ (out)CHEBI:15378 - putrescine(in) + L-ornithine(out) = putrescine(out) + L-ornithine(in)This reaction proceeds in the forward direction.
Activity regulation
Uptake activity, but not antiporter activity, is inhibited by CCCP and N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). Uptake of putrescine is inhibited by high concentrations of ornithine.
