Function

function

Catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-arginine into urea and L-ornithine, which is a precursor for polyamine biosynthesis (PubMed:19218089).
May play a role in parasite intra-hepatic development during the host liver stage (PubMed:20527960, PubMed:28642498).

Catalytic activity

Cofactor

Mn2+ (UniProtKB | Rhea| CHEBI:29035 )

Note: Binds 2 manganese ions per subunit.

Pathway

Nitrogen metabolism; urea cycle; L-ornithine and urea from L-arginine: step 1/1.

Phenotypes & Variants

Disruption phenotype

Mosquito salivary gland sporozoites have a reduced ability to infect BALB/c mice (PubMed:20527960).
Parasite load in the liver of C57BL/6 mouse infected with knockout sporozoites gives mixed effects; in some cases, the parasite load in the liver is not affected and in other cases, it is reduced (PubMed:28642498).
In infected BALB/c mice, causes no differences in blood parasitemia levels and in the onset of morbidity (PubMed:19218089).
Severe reduction in ornithine production during murine erythrocyte infection (PubMed:19218089).
