Function
function
Catalytic tRNA acetyltransferase subunit of the elongator complex, which is required for multiple tRNA modifications, including mcm5U (5-methoxycarbonylmethyl uridine), mcm5s2U (5-methoxycarbonylmethyl-2-thiouridine), and ncm5U (5-carbamoylmethyl uridine). In the elongator complex, acts as a tRNA uridine34 acetyltransferase by mediating formation of carboxymethyluridine in the wobble base at position 34 in tRNAs.
Catalytic activity
- uridine34 in tRNA + acetyl-CoA + S-adenosyl-L-methionine + H2O = 5-(carboxymethyl)uridine34 in tRNA + 5'-deoxyadenosine + L-methionine + CoA + 2 H+This reaction proceeds in the forward direction.

Cofactor
Note: Binds 1 [4Fe-4S] cluster. The cluster is coordinated with 3 cysteines and an exchangeable S-adenosyl-L-methionine.
